"How to Write and Publish your Paper" m'a énormément aidé à améliorer mes capacités d'écrire un article, voir comment penser en anglais et comment rédiger en anglais, les différentes étapes à réaliser à fin de rédiger et publier dans une revue internationale et les différentes fautes qu'il faut éviter. Je signale que grâce à ce projet, j'ai réussi à rédiger, le long de cette période de projet, un article en anglais à soumettre dans un journal international dans mon domaine de recherche.

"Science Communication" est un projet intéressant qui a amélioré ma pratique de la langue anglaise et élargi mes connaissances et ma culture générale sur les sciences et la communication des sciences. A la fin du stage j'ai participé à un tournage, où j'ai présenté oralement devant une caméra une partie de ma thèse. Cette expérience restera pour moi adorable et inoubliable.

What’s a trick?

It’s a simple device, a tool that helps you solve a problem.

Every trade has its tricks, its solutions to its own distinctive problems: easy ways of doing something lay people, or beginners have trouble with.

The Science Communication Trade, just as plumbing or cooking, has its “tricks” to solve its peculiar problems.

Some of these tricks are simple rules of thumb derived from experience. Others come out of an analysis of the situation in which the problem arises. The tricks can show a way around some common difficulties and suggest a procedure that solves them relatively easily what would otherwise seem an intractable and persistent problem.

To build this collection of “tricks”, I would like you to name the problems that you experienced yourself – either during the interviews or other oral presentations.

To me, it’s important to use examples – your “stories”. So please send me your comments!

You have done the research, got your results and are ready to write a paper. Then this course could be for you! The course is targeted for PhD students form all disciplines; but it is most useful for PhD students who are in the process of writing scientific articles. You will have to bring to the first session an idea for a paper - either one you are writing at the moment, or one that you plan to write in the near future. In other words you should have data on which to base a paper and be ready to start writing! If not, it is best to wait until the next course ...

Publishing a paper in a journal is the main and most important way of communicating the results of your research to the research community. The skill of writing an article – and getting it published in a peer reviewed journal – is highly prized, but rarely taught. However, writing good technical or scientific papers is a discipline in its own right, which can be learnt alongside your main qualification.

This 18 h course will introduce the concepts of scientific writing and the procedures to publish scientific papers. But it is also a practical 'hands-on' workshop. This course offers advice and guidance from PhD students on how to write a paper and get it published, from notebooks to the first draft, submission, referees' comments, publication and all steps in between.

Content

The main emphasis is on the primary scientific paper, the most common form of scientific publishing. The course will explain the current structure of scientific literature, the main features of the scientific information 'industry', and the particular rules, customs and expectations, which the international scientific community follows in publishing.

Particular emphasis will be placed on rarely taught aspects of the publication process such as how to decide on a suitable journal for a scientific paper, as well as practicalities concerning the preparation and work through the different stages of the publication process (manuscript preparation, submission and dealing with editors). Less emphasis will be placed on grammar and the use of English (although aspects of language use will be discussed).

Why Publish? Benefits to your career, and how NOT publishing can damage it.

What To Publish. Understanding different types of papers. Original articles, Review articles. Brief contributions. Internal Reports. Book Reviews.

Where To Publish. Scientific Journals — Categories: general, discipline-wide, niche, specialized, general-interest, etc. "Publishing" at conferences and meetings — who "needs to know" and what do they read? Publishing for "outsiders" vs for "insiders."

Who Are You Publishing For? Understanding the audience(s) you are writing for — and why you are selecting them! Differences between internal vs. external audiences — which audience can most impact your career advancement? Which are easiest to write for given your current/future research schedule and recent research accomplishments?

Overcoming Obstacles to Publishing. Understanding the most common reasons why researchers don’t turn their work into published papers; how to overcome these barriers.

What Are Journals Looking For. How to find the "right" journal for your research. Correlating your research with what is of interest.

Understanding the Structure of the Basic Research Paper. The "IMRaD" Structure as your key to planning and organizing a publishable paper. Abstracts. Other sections of papers. How to write Introduction and Discussion sections.

How to Get A Paper Planned and Written. The secret is in the Planning — how to plan each section of a paper so it dovetails with research activities you have to do anyway. Why people find it hard to edit/rewrite; how to do it quickly and easily. Getting feedback before submitting. Incorporating feedback. Polishing.

Ensuring You Make A Professional Submission and Using a journal’s "Instructions to Authors" to your advantage. Communicating With A Journal. Learning to think like an editor. What they expect. How they respond to submissions. Understanding rejections and requests for changes. The peer review process.

Teaching Methods

To engage you in developing your writing and presentation skills, the course is in the format of “active learning”, a combination of an informative PowerPoint lecture, followed by a practical task. Tasks involve editing and improving each section of your paper.

Merci beaucoup ! C'est vraiment très intéressant de se revoir, avec un peu de recul.
Merci encore pour cette formation très intéressante, pour laquelle je continue à faire de la pub autour de moi. Pas plus tard que ce matin je lisais un magazine vendu en kiosque qui traitait de mon sujet de recherche, avec des auteurs que je connais bien, sous une forme journalistique destinée à tous, et ça m'a vraiment donné envie, dès que possible, de me lancer moi aussi à communiquer dans la presse grand public sur mes recherches.

Je vous remercie pour ce cours très intéressant. J'ai largement sous-estimé la communication avec les média. Merci aussi pour la checklist qui est sûrement très précieuse. Je n'ai pas l'impression de savoir tout sur comment agir avec les media maintenant, mais dans tous les cas j'ai été sensibilisée à ce sujet. L'important serait de continuer ... je suis très intéressée par votre proposition de travailler un article grand public en projet long l'année prochaine.
